Ricky Gervais’ latest original comedy
series, Derek, divided fans and critics alike with the first series,
but the Golden Globe winning writer is sticking by what he pronounces
as his favourite creation to date, with a second six-part series
starting on Channel 4 this Wednesday (Janaury 30th).
Kind-hearted,
naïve Derek (Gervais) is still working at the old people’s home
with friend and caretaker, Dougie (Karl Pilkington) but their jobs
and the kind, funny, but unlucky in love, Hannah’s are under threat
when the local council announces budget cuts that need to be
implemented by ‘streamlining’ staff.
Derek and Dougie fail to impress when
the home is inspected but the ever-dedicated Derek attempts to get a
petition going in the town centre to try and keep the home open,
whereas Dougie takes a more verbally direct approach.
A massive departure from Gervais’
other work but oddly enthralling.
