5/5 stars
Rule number one for films that clean up on the
international film festival awards circuit seems to be that no-one will see
them until they’re released on DVD due to profit-spinning cineplexes not
wishing to give up one of their twelve Taken 2 time slots.
Adrian Brody’s intense performance as a jaded school
teacher in Detachment is, sadly, one of those stellar pieces of film-making to
have flown under the radar during 2012’s summer blockbuster season but will now,
hopefully, reach a wider audience with its DVD release.
Despite crucifying the American school system, writer,
Carl Lund, purports an unspoken belief that education still holds the key to
the world’s problems and this, together with the soul-crushingly purposeless
students and direction from the man who made American History X, make for a
provocative, demanding film.
The language, sexual content and emotionally stressful
scenes belie the 15 certification, so approach with caution.
