Greenwich is set to be the
first London
borough to be awarded Royal status in over 80 years in honour of the role it
will play as host of this year’s Olympic Games and also the rich, historical significance
of the area.
John Sergant discovers gems in Greenwich’s past along with
intriguing Royal links and how these are coming together to deliver an
exciting, contemporary experience for the millions of visitors descending on
the borough from all over the world this summer.
John visits the team on board the Cutty Sark who are
attempting to complete a £50 million facelift on the fire-wrecked tea clipper
in time for Queen Elizabeth II’s official visit.
Work at Greenwich
Park’s Olympic Equestrian
course and the Millennium Dome’s basketball and gymnastics arena is also
celebrated in the programme, along with the surprising role King Charles II’s
mistress played in the conception of the Royal Observatory and meridian line.
