With just about everyone jumping on the “isn’t Britain great, look at our Olympics” bandwagon, several Best of British-type compilation albums have been re-released, and this one is by far the most comprehensive and well-selected collection of the UK’s finest aural creations from the last fifty years.
The first CD takes you from Queen’s Somebody to Love to Mike
Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, the second covers the whole Madness, New Order,
Spandau Ballet bit, with the third and final bringing us bang up to date, with
all our proudest global musical exports making an appearance.
The Beatles and Oasis are noticeably absent, thanks to the
greedy owners of the publishing-rights, and it’s a shame that their work can’t
appear on such a definitive and impressive celebration of British music.
In spite of this, even the most unpatriotic will struggle to
not feel a pang of pride in the sixty timeless tracks that were all crafted on
our richly creative island.
