Racism still defiles the beautiful game
but, happily, the sport has come a long way since the pioneering days
of Laurie Cunningham-the first black footballer to play for England
in 1979.
His life was cut tragically short when
Cunningham died in a car accident aged just 33, but the impact he had
lives on to this day.
During his short but promising career,
Laurie refused to let chanting from the stands intimidate him and
this one-off documentary explored how this third of West Brom’s
legendary “Three Degrees”, dealt with the pressure and
opportunity put on his shoulders.
Unprecedented access to Laurie’s
mother’s scrapbook, as well as anecdotes from players and friends,
tell Cunningham’s story extraordinary story from the most personal
angle.
