DVD - Liberal Arts (12)

Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother) has done a Zach Braff (Scrubs) and written and directed an indie vehicle to distance himself from the frothy sitcom that made him famous.
Liberal Arts is the story of 30-something Jesse who returns to his alma mater for his professor’s retirement party and meets, Zibby, 16 years his junior but with an inescapable attraction.
Radnor nobly avoids a Hollywood ending and is so, so, so on the money with the intimate intricacies that mean some relationships can’t work, despite one, or even both, parties wanting it to.
His subtle characters lay out the sad, unromantic truth that so many other things have to be in place to allow people to be together, but somehow leaves viewers with a sense of understanding and closure over this difficult, yet strangely uplifting, story.
