Jess Day (Zooey Deschanel) is an adorably awkward
primary school teacher who finds herself moving in with a mismatched trio of
guys when her boyfriend leaves her, and sets about imparting her innocent,
wide-eyed wisdom on her new housemates.
Jess and her thirty-something screen buddies are all
reassuringly unsettled and neurotic in their own ways and their opposing
careers and love lives make for scene-by-scene comedy gold.
Stand out episodes include Wedding, when Jess acts as
a human diversion tactic, complete with comedy teeth, and a turn as a hand bell
troupe coordinator in Bells. Also, Bad in Bed, who’s visual riches must be seen to
be believed.
Probably THE most likeable female lead in television
history and the most well-written mixed-bag cast since Friends make New Girl
one of the most entertaining and accessible things on TV, and one which is,
thankfully, already in its second series on E4.
