BBC Four
Solar Mamas is the story of a mother of four from Jordan,
Rafea, who is one of many women around the world working to pull their families
out of poverty - and Rafea is going to do it by bringing electricity and light
to her impoverished village.
BBC Four follows Rafea to India as she enrols on a
life-changing six month course at the Barefoot College, a school run by social
activist, Roy Bunker, who was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People
of 2010 and has helped over 3 million people train in sustainable disciplines
such as midwifery, architecture, teaching and, in Rafea’s case, solar
engineering.
Rafea’s new skills will certainly benefit her community for
generations to come but they have an unanticipated effect on her relationship
with her patriarchal husband.
