As with Mamma Mia, Rock of Ages is a feel-good box-office
smash, with a cringeworthy soundtrack featuring Hollywood
heavyweights tearing some of the most memorable songs from one of the most
fashion-forward decades to pieces.
Highlights include Tom Cruise delivering a helium-fuelled Paradise City and Catherine Zeta-Jones flattening
Pat Benetar’s Hit Me with Your Best Shot.
The beauty of the record is in the commemoration of the
original songwriters’ talent, whose euphoric key changes and anthemic lyrics
survive the A-lister cast’s squawkings.
If you’re precious about your beloved 1980’s stadium
anthems, steer clear of this, although you might just be able to stomach the
original Broadway cast’s recording, at least they’ve some classically trained,
powerful lungs to throw behind the tunes.
