The Office, Extras and An Idiot Abroad were hits, but Life’s Too Short and that one about the old people’s home were dire misses, but Gervais has redeemed himself with the sleeper success that is The Ricky Gervais show.
The idea is incredibly simple and sees the trio’s massively
popular podcasts, in which they goad Pilkington with deep, philosophical
questions, plucked from the FM waves, accompanied by charming animation and put
on the TV.
Karl’s psychological nuances work beautifully with the
simple visuals and the show’s format, as with An Idiot Abroad, allow the almost
silent comedy partner, Stephen Merchant, equal limelight alongside the attention-grabbing
Gervais and the pair allow Pilkington to steer the audience though his uniquely
skewed world-vision.
